Medal: The designer of the medal was Nathan Karp. On a 38 mm cupro-nickel disc of 20 gram weight, a raised service emblem upon incuse lines part of the candelabra. The service emblem is surrounded by two olive branches which spring forth from five links of a chain. The reverse of the medal has a screw and nut holding the ribbon that is folded over a bar.
The lower side of the reverse of the medal has a serial number (here covered).

Clasp: dimensions 45.2 x 14 mm. Pin back. Silver mark 925 on the lower right corner.

Ribbon: The ribbon is blue with a thin white stripe. Width 40 mm.
 
 
    Current design

The current medal shows the new symbol of the Prison Service.

The reverse of the medal has a screw and nut holding the ribbon. No serial number.

Clasp: Clutch back. Chrome covered metal.
