HistoryHapoel (Hebrew: 'the worker') is an Israeli Jewish sports association established in 1926 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. In 1928, the first Hapoel games were held in the Land of Israel (British Mandate Palestine) to showcase the strength of the labor movement within the Jewish settlement and promote socialist values. The games continued after the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, although their objectives gradually changed due to political reasons. The Hapoel Convention was a national and international sports event held every four years under the auspices of the President of the State of Israel. The convention's public council was headed by the Secretary General of the General Labor Federation. |
Initially, the "Hapoel Convention" was a national gathering of all members of "Hapoel" athletes in a variety of sports, holding meetings and competitions that lasted several days. As the number of "Hapoel" members grew, the nature of the event also changed, and it became a summary of the activities of the major sports association in Israel, celebrated with hundreds of events throughout the country. The focus of the convention was international and national events. The last games were held in 1995.
