Salvador Dali created a series of etchings of the Twelve Tribes of Israel in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the State of Israel. He was fascinated by the establishment of the Jewish State and rebirth of its culture after two thousand years of exile. Although he was a surrealist artist, he created these designs that were based on the Bible.
The medal set was created with
recognition from the prime minister of Israel's anniversary committee, for the
Israeli commemorative society. The set was minted by the Medallic Art company
N.Y. New York. The Dali fine art medals from the twelve tribes of Israel are of
varying weights, with only a few having the same weight. This is due to the
individual fine art work designed for and on each medallion.
Though these are obviously not Israeli
medals, we present them here because of their connection to Israel.
